In 1870, Dr. John Brighton and his wife Louise travel west on a wagon train bound for California. Tragically, Louise dies during childbirth upon reaching the Oklahoma Territory, but their infant daughter survives. Grieving and alone, John decides to remain in the nearby town of Cherokee Wells, where he sets up a medical practice and receives support from the kindly Mrs. Fitzgerald, who helps care for his child. Despite the town's peaceful appearance, trouble brews when wealthy rancher Cass Dobie and his brother Mel attempt to gain control over Cherokee Wells. Their schemes include pressuring rival businessmen and coveting land belonging to their Indian neighbor, Charlie Smith, who unknowingly sits atop valuable oil deposits. When Charlie refuses to sell, tensions escalate, resulting in a dangerous feud between the Dobie brothers and Charlie. Dr. Brighton, reluctant to take sides, is drawn into the conflict, facing potential tragedy as a result.
