After the Dalton gang is wiped out at Coffeeville, gang member Bill Doolin, arriving late, manages to escape but ends up killing a man in the process. Now wanted for murder, he rises to become the leader of the Doolin gang. Struggling with his criminal past, Doolin eventually leaves the gang and attempts to forge a new identity and life. However, when former gang members resurface, his true identity is revealed, forcing him back into a life on the run from the law.
