Count Alucard, hailing from Budapest, arrives in the swamps of the Deep South after meeting Katherine Caldwell, the heiress of the Caldwell family who owns the Dark Oaks plantation. Katherine, deeply fascinated by the occult, becomes entangled with Alucard, whose mysterious name no one thinks to read in reverse—except Dr. Brewster, a sharp family friend. Teaming up with Professor Lazlo, an occult expert, Dr. Brewster sets out to confront Alucard and the now-changed Katherine. The question arises: has Alucard influenced Katherine, or is she the one manipulating him? Meanwhile, Katherine's fiancé, Frank Stanley, is pushed to the edge of his sanity when he accidentally kills Katherine, only to find she mysteriously continues to live.
