Walter Paisley, a nerdish waiter at a Bohemian café, is envious of the talent and popularity of its artistic regulars. After accidentally killing his landlady's cat and covering the body in plaster to hide the evidence, he is mistakenly hailed as a brilliant sculptor. His new admirers demand to see more of his work, but lacking any real artistic talent, Walter resorts to increasingly desperate methods—leading to mysterious disappearances among the café's patrons.
