Carefree drifter Chuck Conner is heading west when he stops to visit an old friend and his four sons. After his friend is killed in a riding accident, Chuck takes responsibility for the family. Together they hit the road, and Chuck finds work on a ranch, but he must hide the children since his boss dislikes kids. Tensions rise with a neighboring ranch, and the situation becomes even more complicated when a girl fleeing her cruel uncle joins them. Chuck begins to question what he has done to deserve these unexpected challenges.
