In Wisbourg, Germany, estate agent Knock sends his associate, Hutter, to Count Orlok’s castle in Transylvania. Orlok wishes to purchase an isolated house in Wisbourg, directly across from Hutter’s own home. Before departing, Hutter leaves his innocent wife, Ellen, in the care of friends. His journey is filled with foreboding, as many locals refuse to go near the castle, warning of strange happenings. Upon arrival, Hutter succeeds in selling the house to the mysterious Count Orlok. However, he quickly senses dark and unsettling occurrences, including an overwhelming sense of dread—even in daylight, when the Count sleeps unusually late. Hutter discovers Orlok’s cryptic sleeping chamber and, recalling a book he's read, suspects the Count is a vampire, or Nosferatu. Trapped at the castle, Hutter realizes the danger as Count Orlok travels to Wisbourg concealed in coffins, leaving death in his wake.
