Kittridge is initially hired by the villains but changes course to defend rancher Dan Saxon after discovering the true circumstances. He wins Saxon's ranch in a card game, though Saxon has his own reasons for losing deliberately. Telford and Lake resort to sabotage, including bushwhacking and sparking a wildfire, to thwart Kittridge and Saxon's attempt to drive their cattle herd to the railhead.
