Set in 1853, just after the Gadsden Purchase brings part of Mexico into the United States, an Army Major is dispatched to Tucson to broker peace with the local Native American tribes. He succeeds in negotiating with Cochise, the Apache leader, though Cochise is unable to sway the Comanches. When the Apaches repel a Comanche raid, tensions mount—especially as a local agitator in Tucson seeks to prolong the Indian war. The peace treaty is threatened after a stray Army rifle kills Cochise's woman, making it appear that the Americans are to blame. Cast: - Robert Stack as Maj.
