When ranch foreman Chip Donahue (John Dehner) finds Matt Brown (Audie Murphy), an aimless, hard-drinking drifter, in a New Mexico bar, he delivers surprising news: Matt has inherited a ranch from the recently deceased owner who may have been his estranged father. Initially intent on selling, Matt decides instead to keep the ranch, hoping to win back his former lover, Janet Calvert (Terry Moore). However, the ranch is facing foreclosure, forcing Matt and Chip to team up in a bid to save the property and settle their debt with the bank.
