Ed Bannon, Chief of Scouts at Fort Clark, Texas, narrowly escapes an Apache ambush while working with the cavalry. The US Army seeks peace with the Apaches and plans to relocate them to reservations in Florida. Viewing Bannon's actions as disruptive to this mission, the Army relieves him of his duties. Suspicious of Toriano, the Apache chief's son who has just returned from an Eastern education, Bannon continues to investigate, causing tension between himself, the Army, and the Apaches.
