Army deserter Bart Laish decides that the best way to escape is to join a wagon train headed for Oregon. While on their trail, Bart comes across his old friend, Major Andy Pepperis, who is dying from wounds sustained in an Indian attack. Pepperis warns Bart that the wagon train is the next target, and Bart soon finds the nearby army station, Camp Taylor, destroyed. Assuming Pepperis' identity, Bart catches up with the wagon train and takes command of its military escort. He quickly proves his leadership and earns the respect of the group. As they draw closer to their destination, Bart risks exposure and must decide if and when he will leave the group.
