Set over the course of one bustling night at Union Depot, a major metropolitan train station, the film follows travelers from all walks of life as their paths cross. Chick and his friend Scrap Iron are newly released from prison after serving time for vagrancy. Hungry and seeking a fresh start, Chick finds a valise left behind by a drunken traveler; inside are a shaving kit, a suit of clothes, and a wad of cash. With his appearance transformed, Chick buys a meal and looks for some companionship among the crowd. He approaches Ruth Collins, a stranded, unemployed showgirl, and brings her to the station hotel. Quickly realizing Ruth is not a streetwalker but a victim of hard times, Chick is moved by her plight and promises to help her buy a train ticket to Salt Lake City, where she hopes to find work. Meanwhile, Scrap Iron finds a wallet and a claim check discarded by a pickpocket. When Chick claims the corresponding violin case, it turns out to be filled with counterfeit money. As Chick spends the cash to buy Ruth a new dress and her train ticket, the real counterfeiter—and the Secret Service—draw closer.
