Commander Peter Kent of the Royal Navy returns home after three years abroad, only to find he has little idea how to handle his three children—Peter, Anne, and Fusty, whose ages range from five to eleven. When his wife Mary must travel to Canada, Peter takes the children to his father's new country home, which unexpectedly turns out to be a windmill. As they settle in, they find themselves clashing with an American family in the neighborhood.
