After being unmasked as con artists by the French police, the Carlton family is forced to leave the Riviera. On the train to London, George-Anne Carlton (Janet Gaynor) rebuffs her determined former suitor, Duncan Macrae (Richard Carlson), due to his lack of wealth and her family's dubious reputation. The destitute Carltons befriend Miss Ellen Fortune (Minnie Dupree), a wealthy but lonely woman, following a train crash where George-Anne and her brother, Richard (Douglas Fairbanks, Jr.), care for her. Grateful, Miss Fortune invites the family to stay at her London mansion. While initially seeing this as a temporary opportunity, George-Anne persuades her family to endear themselves to Miss Fortune—with the secret hope that they will change their crooked ways rather than just inherit her wealth. As Felix Anstruther (Henry Stephenson), Miss Fortune's lawyer, investigates the Carltons' background, the family gradually adopts honest pursuits. Duncan helps Sahib Carlton (Roland Young) secure a job as a car salesman, while Richard starts work at an engineering firm, aiming to impress Miss Fortune and earn the respect of Leslie Saunders (Paulette Goddard), whom he soon courts. The Carltons begin to reform, with Sahib excelling in his role and Richard studying engineering. When Miss Fortune falls seriously ill, Anstruther reveals she is no longer wealthy and is at risk of losing her home. The Carltons, now genuinely concerned for her well-being, insist on supporting her regardless of her finances. Their transformation is complete, displaying true care and selflessness. The story concludes with George-Anne marrying Duncan, Richard marrying Leslie, and Miss Fortune finding a new family home with the reformed Carltons.
