Ace Connors (John Hodiak) is a clever con man with half a million dollars in bonds hidden in a cookbook. While trying to sell a phony oil investment to Dwight Chadwick (Lloyd Corrigan) at a Beverly Hills hotel, he's interrupted by Dwight's friend, Ricki Woodner (Lucille Ball), who has a scam of her own. Facing prison for his part in the bond theft, Ace agrees to testify in order to reduce his sentence—much to the displeasure of his former partner in crime, Fly Feletti (Elisha Cook, Jr.). Assigned to escort Ace from Los Angeles to New York by train, detective Bob Simms (Lloyd Nolan) must deal with an entourage that includes Ricki, who begins to fall for Ace, and Fly, who is determined to stop Ace from testifying. The journey takes a detour in New Orleans during Mardi Gras, where Ace and Ricki share a romantic adventure and he reveals the location of the hidden bonds. When Fly makes his move, Simms outsmarts him. Though Ace believes Ricki has disappeared with the loot, she reappears, devoted and ready to wait for him until his release from Sing Sing.
