According to legend, if three strangers gather before the idol of Kwan Yin—the Chinese goddess of fortune and destiny—on Chinese New Year's night and make a common wish, Kwan Yin will grant it. In London, 1938, Crystal Shackleford owns such an idol and decides to test the legend. She invites two random strangers to join her, proposing they make a shared wish: that a sweepstakes ticket they all buy equal shares in becomes a winner.
