Erwin Trowbridge is a meek salesman who possesses an uncanny ability to predict horse race winners. Although he only calculates the results on paper and never actually places bets, his wife becomes suspicious of his fascination with horses. Erwin also faces constant bullying from his overbearing brother-in-law. Seeking refuge, Erwin has a drink at a local saloon, where a trio of colorful gamblers discover his talent. They soon keep him a virtual prisoner in a room above the bar, pressuring him to provide them with winning picks.
