Set in 1461 France, the film follows a group of nobles who, fearing that King Louis XI will seize their lands, join forces with the rebellious Duke of Burgundy to overthrow him. One of the Duke's captains recommends enlisting François Villon, leader of the Vagabonds—outlaws who rob the rich to help the poor and who are known for their opposition to the king. Villon and his comrades enter Paris in alliance with Burgundy, but are quickly captured by the king's men. Recognizing Villon's influence over the people, King Louis XI offers Villon a proposal: defend Paris against Burgundy and assist in exposing traitors within the royal court.
