After years of trying unsuccessfully to have a baby, the Pooles turn to the Rock-A-Bye Adoption Agency. They are assigned Miss Novick as an investigator, but a series of misunderstandings causes her to develop a negative impression of Augie Poole. Through further unexpected circumstances, Augie manages to change her mind, only to later suspect that he is the father of the baby Miss Novick is carrying. When the Rock-A-Bye Agency finally finds the Pooles a child, Augie becomes convinced the baby is Miss Novick's and that he is the biological father—which his wife comes to believe as well. Amidst mounting confusion and comedic misunderstandings, everything is eventually clarified, leading to a happy ending.
