Dim-witted blowhard Melvin G. Ashton is a U.S. Senator who dreams of becoming President. He hires Lew Gibson, a talented PR man, to get him into newsreels and on the front page—never actually expecting Ashton to win. However, Ashton possesses a secret weapon: a diary documenting every shady deal his party has made over the last 35 years. Using this diary, he blackmails the party leaders into backing his candidacy, placing him on the path to the nomination. Meanwhile, an unknown political enemy seeks to obtain the diary, using the young and lovely Valerie Shepherd to infiltrate the Senator's room. Lew’s fiancée, reporter Poppy McNaughton, also tries to get the diary to stop Ashton. The story unfolds as these forces collide around Ashton and his notorious journal.
