The Great Garrick (1937) - Brian Aherne, Olivia de Havilland
Set in the eighteenth century, 'The Great Garrick' follows David Garrick (Brian Aherne), the most celebrated London theater actor of his generation, as he is invited to Paris to star at the prestigious Comédie Française. Before his departure, Garrick is mistakenly quoted as boasting that he will 'teach the French how to act.' Offended, the French actors at the Comédie Française plot to embarrass Garrick by orchestrating an elaborate prank during his journey to Paris. They commandeer an inn along Garrick's route, intending to humiliate him during his overnight stay. Unbeknownst to them, Garrick quickly catches on and decides to play along with their ruse. The plot takes an unexpected turn when a lovely, uninvolved traveler, Germaine Dupont (Olivia de Havilland), arrives at the inn seeking a room, further complicating the troupe's scheme.
