In this zany whodunit, Gracie Allen plays herself as a well-meaning but scatterbrained amateur sleuth who attempts to help master detective Philo Vance (Warren William) solve a murder. The story begins when Gracie's uncle sets her up with Bill at a company picnic. That evening, during a visit to a nightclub, Gracie finds herself inadvertently linking Bill to a thug's murder after discovering the dead body along with Bill's cigarette case. While being questioned at the club, Gracie encounters Vance, who is investigating the case. Despite Gracie's comically bungled attempts at detective work, Vance decides it may be easier to let her assist him. Together—and with Gracie's unconventional "help"—they work toward unraveling the mystery and catching the real killer.
