Thelma Jordon is in love with jewel thief Tony Laredo, who persuades her to move in with her wealthy aunt and steal her jewels. During the robbery, Thelma shoots her formerly-rich aunt but cleverly stages the scene to appear as an outside job. Cleve Marshall, an assistant district attorney, is assigned to the case and quickly falls for Thelma, and she reciprocates his feelings. He manipulates the prosecution so that Thelma is acquitted. However, Tony reappears, and from that point on, nothing works out favorably for Thelma, Cleve, or Tony.
