Philip Marlowe becomes involved in a tangled case when Leslie Murdock steals a rare doubloon from his own mother to exchange for film meant for blackmail. As Marlowe investigates, he encounters a woman who goes into hysterics when touched by a man, a husband-killing femme fatale, three dead bodies, several brawls, a secretary who believes she’s killed her boss (in a plot based on Raymond Chandler’s story "The High Window"), and a son who blackmails his widowed mother.
