Winnie Slade, a young divorcée, purchases an old historic house from eccentric Professor Billings, who resides there with his quirky housekeeper and unusual neighbors. Intent on converting the property into a hotel, Winnie allows the current occupants to remain—unaware that Professor Billings is conducting bizarre experiments on traveling salesmen, whose bodies accumulate in the cellar. The house soon becomes a magnet for even more colorful characters, including a quack doctor (who is also the town sheriff), Winnie’s excitable ex-husband, a peculiar choreographer, a punch-drunk salesman, and a lunatic who has escaped from the Italian army.
