Set in Los Angeles, "The Blue Gardenia" follows Norah Larkin, a telephone operator who spends her birthday alone, reading a letter from her fiancé stationed overseas. Devastated to discover he's leaving her for a Japanese nurse, Norah accepts a blind date with Harry Prebble, a womanizing photographer. After an evening of heavy drinking at the Blue Gardenia Club, Norah is taken to Harry's apartment, where he tries to force himself on her. In self-defense, she strikes him with a poker. The next morning, Norah awakens in her own apartment with no memory of the previous night. Upon reading the newspaper, she learns that Harry has been murdered and that the police are searching for a woman matching her description, having found her personal belongings at the scene. Fearing she may be the killer, Norah contacts journalist Casey Mayo, who offers to help her in exchange for an exclusive interview.
