Peggy Evans, a bored 21-year-old, has just received recognition for perfect attendance at work but feels trapped in her everyday routine. Seeking excitement, she leaves behind a note—mistaken for a suicide note—and moves to New York for a fresh start. After a makeover, a chance accident lands her in the headlines as an amnesia victim, simply because she no longer wants to be Peggy Evans. The media suspects she might be a missing heiress, Carol Burden, prompting Peggy to dig through old newspapers for clues. She discovers that Cornelius Burden, Carol's father, has a history of exposing impostors, and she must cleverly outwit him and his companion, Baba, to maintain her new identity.
