Dr. Richard Cross, a psychiatrist, is treating a young woman named Janet Stewart, who has entered a catatonic state after witnessing a shocking crime: she saw a man kill his wife with a candlestick. As Janet comes out of her shock, she recognizes Dr. Cross himself as the murderer. To hide his secret, Dr. Cross takes Janet to his sanitarium. Urged by his nurse and lover, Elaine Jordan, he attempts to silence Janet with an overdose of insulin, but cannot bring himself to commit cold-blooded murder. He asks Elaine to fetch the medicine to save Janet, but she refuses, leading to a fatal argument in which Cross strangles Elaine. Ultimately, he saves Janet's life but must now face the consequences of his actions, standing accused of two murders.
