Howard Kemp is a determined bounty hunter on the trail of the dangerous outlaw Ben Vandergroat. Throughout his pursuit, Kemp reluctantly teams up with two unlikely partners: Jesse Tate, an old prospector, and Roy Anderson, a dishonorably discharged Union soldier. Tensions rise as the three men discover that Vandergroat has a $5,000 reward on his head, and greed begins to strain their alliance. Vandergroat cleverly sows mistrust among them, eventually turning one partner against the others in a bid to escape.
