Homicide detective Mike Conovan investigates the shooting of fellow detective Monigan, who was apparently moonlighting as a guard for a bookie. Mike soon discovers that all the bookies in town are being robbed, which frustrates the local racket bosses who can't rely on usual police protection. Navigating a web of blind alleys and double crosses, Mike also faces personal troubles as his wife grows increasingly disenchanted with his dangerous profession.
