Tom Collier, a shiftless playboy, spends his days drifting from party to party until he meets photographer Christie Sage. Inspired by Christie, Tom takes over The Bantam, a liberal magazine that stands in direct opposition to his family's values. As Tom and Christie grow closer and fall in love, he proposes marriage. However, Christie, feeling out of place in Tom's social world, turns him down—a decision she later comes to regret. Meanwhile, the opportunistic Cecelia Henry quickly seizes the chance to win Tom on the rebound, leading him into an ill-fated marriage.
