Oliver Pease gathers courage from his wife, Martha, and tricks his editor into giving him a more substantial assignment than his usual lost pet notices. Martha suggests the question, "Has a little child ever changed your life?" As Oliver interviews a variety of characters—including two slow-talking musicians, an actress often typecast in sarong roles, and a wandering cardsharp—he uncovers stories where the "child" in question is often less innocent than expected. These include a mechanic's "baby" who is actually a grown woman and musician, a spoiled child star learning kindness, and a family who aren't sure they want their lost brat returned. The film weaves these encounters into the story of Oliver's own growth.
