Julia Ross secures employment through a noisy agency and is hired by a wealthy widow, Mrs. Hughes. She moves into Mrs. Hughes' house, but two days later, she awakens in a different house, wearing different clothes, and is told she has a new identity. Julia is now supposedly Mrs. Hughes' daughter-in-law, having suffered a nervous breakdown. She soon discovers a sinister plot: Ralph Hughes, Mrs. Hughes' son, has murdered his wife and disposed of the body, and with his mother's help, intends to pass Julia off as his deceased wife. Their plan is to eventually kill Julia and make it look like suicide.
