Clifton Webb reprises his role as Mr. Lynn Belvedere, the world's greatest genius, originally introduced in 'Sitting Pretty.' In this comedy, Belvedere learns he is not eligible for an honorary award because he never attended college. Determined to set things right, he enrolls as a freshman at a major university, quickly becoming the target of hazing by the obnoxious upperclassman Avery Brubaker (Alan Young). Despite being middle-aged, Belvedere rapidly becomes the 'Big Man on Campus,' complicating his hopes of remaining anonymous while earning his degree. Journalism major Ellen Baker (Shirley Temple) threatens to expose Belvedere's identity by writing a major magazine article about him. Throughout his accelerated college journey—finishing four years of study in just six months—Belvedere also finds time to play matchmaker between Ellen and her estranged boyfriend, Bill Chase (Tom Drake). The film was popular enough to inspire a sequel, 'Mr. Belvedere Rings the Bell' (1951).
