Mary, infatuated with her boss, is devastated to discover he is having an affair with a coworker. Distraught, she impulsively considers ending her life, but her clumsy attempt is interrupted when Tony, a seemingly wealthy and dashing stranger, rescues her from the river. Tony brings Mary home to recover, but the situation becomes complicated when his wealthy fiancée arrives and misunderstands the scene, breaking off their engagement. Tony soon confesses to Mary that he is actually broke, with only £300 to his name. Both feeling hopeless, they receive tickets to Monte Carlo—intended for Tony’s honeymoon—and, in a sudden burst of hope, decide together to risk everything at the casino.
