Set in the late nineteenth century, 'Ladies in Retirement' follows Ellen Creed, who serves as the live-in companion to Miss Leonora Fiske, a retired actress residing in the English countryside. When Ellen learns that her two sisters, Emily and Louisa Creed, face institutionalization due to their disruptive behavior, she persuades Miss Fiske to let them stay temporarily. Miss Fiske, unaware of the full extent of their mental instability, agrees reluctantly. Ellen, however, has plans to make her sisters' stay permanent, much to Miss Fiske's eventual dismay. Tensions escalate as Ellen manipulates events to maintain control of the household.
