Ventriloquist Jerry Morgan's love life consistently falters, especially when his doll Clarence becomes mean and jealous whenever marriage is discussed. After his fiancée Audrey leaves him, Jerry smashes both his dolls, Clarence and Terrence. Meanwhile, Morgan's doll maker, Papinek, who is involved in a spy ring, hides stolen secret plans for the top secret Lafayette airplane inside Jerry's dolls. As Jerry departs for Zurich, Papinek uses the dolls as a means to smuggle the plans. Another spy ring, seeking the same documents, follows Jerry, leading to a chaotic chase that involves both spy organizations—and even the police, who suspect Jerry of murder.
