In postwar London, Bill Saunders, a disturbed ex-soldier, kills a man during a pub brawl. On the run, Bill seeks refuge in the apartment of Jane Wharton, a lonely nurse. Despite her reservations about his violent past, Jane grows close to Bill, who is determined to reform. She helps him find work as a medical supplies truck driver.
