Ex-convicts Perry Smith and Dick Hickock reunite in Kansas, breaking several parole conditions, to plan a robbery based on a tip about a hidden safe containing $10,000 in the home of the Clutter family of Holcomb, Kansas. Driven by dreams of escaping to Mexico, the duo's partnership is defined by Dick's brash manipulation and Perry's sensitive, dreamy nature masking a violent streak. Perry keeps all of his hopes and memories in a large box he carries everywhere. The heist does not go as planned, culminating in the brutal murder of all four Clutter family members, with the pair escaping with only $43.
