Ambitious District Attorney Victor Scott zealously prosecutes Ed Clary for a woman's murder. However, as Clary faces execution, Scott receives evidence that proves the condemned man's innocence. After realizing his grievous mistake, Scott tries to halt the execution, but he's too late. Humbled by his error, Scott resigns and begins private practice. Using the same cunning that built his reputation, he draws the attention of mob kingpin Frank Garland, who successfully bribes him into defending one of his henchmen in a murder trial. Scott employs impressive courtroom theatrics to win the case, but soon finds himself entangled in dangerous mob politics. The stakes escalate when his former protégé in the D.A.'s office is accused of murder, seemingly set up as an informant for Garland's mob.
