Mrs. Cummings, a freelance magazine photographer and recent widow, travels with her model, Susan, on assignment covering resorts in California and Nevada. While driving west from Las Vegas, they pick up Jim Henry, a recently discharged Marine hitchhiking to a friend's home near the Salton Sea. Meanwhile, back in Las Vegas, a blonde woman known casually by Jim is found murdered, and Jim becomes the target of a manhunt led by Police Lieutenant White Eagle of the Las Vegas police.
