Set in 1880s San Francisco, 'Gentleman Jim' follows the journey of Jim Corbett, a brash and extroverted bank clerk who is sponsored by influential members of the Olympic Club to help make boxing a more 'gentlemanly' sport. With the introduction of the Marquis of Queensbury Rules, Corbett quickly becomes an accomplished fighter. However, his social ambitions and boastful nature alienate his benefactors, who eventually conspire to humble him. Despite these obstacles, Corbett's innovative footwork and talent enable him to defeat larger, stronger opponents, ultimately leading to a championship match against his idol, John L. Sullivan.
