Peter and Barbara are en route to their holiday destination when Peter, stepping off the train to buy a newspaper, unexpectedly bumps into his ex-girlfriend, Carol. Before he can return, the train departs, leaving his wife on board. Determined to catch up, Peter and Carol hire a car and set off in pursuit. However, their unreliable vehicle breaks down, forcing them to stop at a local inn.
