Joe Hufford becomes embroiled in a nightclub brawl, resulting in a man's death in apparent self-defense. Despite the circumstances, Joe is convicted of manslaughter, to the dismay of district attorney George Knowland, who recognizes that Joe's lawyer failed to prove his innocence. Later, Knowland is appointed as the prison's warden, where Joe serves his sentence. The warden takes an interest in Joe, making him a Trusty and his chauffeur. As Joe develops a romance with the warden's daughter, Kay, his path becomes complicated when he becomes involved in a prison escape.
