James Cagney stars as Danny Kenny, a truck driver who enters the boxing world, with Ann Sheridan playing his girlfriend, Peggy. Danny finds success in the ring and uses his earnings to support his brother Eddie's career as a music composer. Meanwhile, Peggy pursues her dream of becoming a professional dancer. When Peggy turns down Danny's marriage proposal to focus on her dance career, Danny continues boxing despite wanting to quit, eventually suffering from blindness caused by a cheating opponent. Danny’s former manager helps him by setting up a newsstand for the now semi-blind ex-fighter. The film concludes with Eddie achieving fame as a composer, dedicating a symphony at Carnegie Hall to his brother, who listens from his newsstand.
