Teenager Jackie Knowles (Richard Attenborough) gets involved in a robbery as the getaway driver. Captured by the police, he is sentenced to serve three years in a borstal institution overseen by the sympathetic Governor (Jack Warner). While serving time, Jackie befriends fellow inmates Alfie (Dirk Bogarde) and Bill (Jimmy Hanley), forging connections and facing the complexities of life behind bars.
