Sailor Ted meets Nora Paige, an aspiring Broadway dancer, at the Lonely Hearts Club run by his friend Gunny's wife, Jenny. Ted and Nora quickly fall in love. During a public relations event on his submarine, Ted rescues the Pekinese belonging to Lucy James, a Broadway star. Captivated by Ted, Lucy falls in love with him, but Ted is ordered by his Captain to accompany Lucy to a night club, even though he already has a date with Nora. Nora, who lives with Jenny and her daughter, becomes upset when she sees a newspaper photo of Ted and Lucy. Lucy, seeking to avoid further gossip, convinces her manager Dinehart to stop the press campaign, threatening to quit if another story is published. Nora, now Lucy’s understudy, reconsiders her feelings for Ted. However, after being asked to dance an 'undanceable' number as a test, Nora is fired by Dinehart. When Ted learns the full story, he is determined to set things right.
