Kirk Bennett is wrongly sentenced to death for the murder of blackmailer Mavis Marlowe, the ex-wife of Martin Blair—a kind-hearted but troubled alcoholic. Determined to prove her husband's innocence, Bennett's devoted wife Catherine teams up with Blair, who soon finds himself falling for her. As Bennett's execution approaches, Catherine and Blair go undercover as a singer and pianist to investigate Marko, a shady nightclub owner and prime suspect. When they fail to expose Marko, Catherine goes to see her husband one last time, while Blair succumbs to a drunken stupor before the true killer is finally revealed.
