Bob Corey, recovering from a series of operations in a veterans' hospital, learns that his friend Steve Connelly, with whom he planned to buy a ranch, has disappeared under suspicious circumstances suggesting involvement in a murder. Accompanied by his nurse, Julie Benson—whom he has fallen in love with—Bob follows a trail of clues and incidents, including three more murders, that point to a gambler masquerading as an undertaker to evade taxes on his illegal income. This gambler seems to be closely linked to his friend's predicament.
