Leo Martin (William Hartnell) works for a criminal gang led by Gus Loman (Raymond Lovell), specializing in smash-and-grab robberies. During a particularly risky heist at a jewelry store, Leo’s wrists are broken by a falling gate. He is caught and imprisoned, refusing to give up Gus to the authorities, but grows resentful after Gus abandons him during the robbery. Upon his release, Leo seeks reemployment with Gus but is harshly rejected due to his injuries. Driven by a thirst for revenge, Leo orchestrates a plot to frame Gus for murder by stealing his gun and killing a cab driver, securing himself an alibi. During these events, Leo meets Carol Dane (Joyce Howard) and begins a romance, concealing his true nature from her. He later blackmails Gus, threatening to hand the gun to the police unless Gus gives him money. The situation escalates when Gus contacts Gregory Lang (Herbert Lom), an antiques dealer and criminal mastermind for whom he has been stealing. Detective Inspector Rogers (Robert Beatty) investigates the murder, remaining suspicious of Leo despite Leo’s attempts to downplay his involvement. Complications arise after Leo and Gregory realize the murder weapon belonged to Gregory, not Gus. This incites Gregory’s anger; he threatens Leo and plots Gus’s murder. Leo’s wrists are injured again, but he and Gus strike a deal: Leo will return the gun and steal a valuable jewel. Meanwhile, Detective Rogers closes in on the truth. In the final confrontation, a gunfight breaks out when Leo returns the jewel and gun to Gregory, resulting in Gregory’s death. Attempting to flee with Carol, Leo is confronted about his lies. Rogers arrives, finally uncovering Leo's guilt. In a desperate escape attempt, Leo tries to jump out of a train window, only to have it slam shut on his wrists, echoing his earlier injury.
